The Little Chevalier

"Henri Louis Nadan," he muttered between his teeth, "truly thou art to be felicitated on thy advent into the New World! With thy formidable sword on thy hip, the order of the king in thy breast pocket, and thy eighteen years' preparation for thy foe in thy hand and heart, thou hast fallen like a log at the feet of a green boy; thou hast lain like a double log under the roof of the Chevalier de la Roche; and thou art escorted on thy triumphant return to thy domicile by a crack-brained dancing master!"

While taking a break from transcribing Sixty Years Hence, by Charles Frederick Henningsen, I started examining this relatively short 1903 novel by Mollie Evelyn Moore Davis. As with An Elephant's Track, and other Stories, I was struck again by its historical and cultural context, not to mention excellent literary style, and decided to give it priority. [Indeed, I intend to publish other works of hers in the future, as I consider the author an outstanding find.]

The text came from this scan, backed up by this scan. The source was in excellent condition, with relatively few OCR errors and impeccable typography, and transcription went quickly. References to page numbers and illustrations were omitted, as were the illustrations themselves. Aside from correcting the very few typographical errors I spotted, my only alteration was to change the contraction 't is to 'tis.

So here it is: the master HTML version, the home-brew Kindle version, and the actual Amazon publication.
